Mircea Lucescu: "Sport is my only motivation"

What motivates a coach who has won more than a dozen trophies? How Zenit's tactics differ from rivals, Who is the best player in the history of football? The blue-white-sky blue's Manager answered the fan's questions.
You have won many trophies in your career. What motivates you at Zenit? (Lech)

First of all, to win the championship. Sport is my only motivation, money does not interest me. During my career I have earned more than enough. Therefore only Zenit's results are important for me.

You've installed attacking football at Zenit. Against the top clubs do you also plan to play like this? (Alex)

We have to play a combination of attacking football and of course, our game should not depend on the actions of the opponent. If we face a team that is stronger than us, we will have to defend firstly and we will do it, but I prefer to play attacking.

Who are main rivals for you in the Russian championship? CSKA or Spartak Moscow for example? (Anton Kuzin)

So far, Zenit have played only against CSKA and Lokomotiv. I don't have so much experience in Russia so it's difficult for me to compare. Comparing the derbys in their intensity at the moment for example, I appreciate all the matches the same, later I will make my conclusions.

Do you keep your distance from the players or are you friendly with them? (Sveta Vasilyev)

First of all, the coach should be able to convey to the players his philosophy and this is possible only when there are good, friendly relations. To achieve this it is impossible to force it. We will win together and we will lose together, we are one.

Please rate the last Euros in terms of football. What new trends have you noticed? (Slava Osipov)

Like any spheres of life, football is progressing. Tactics are changing, physically, and psychology too. Of course, changes in football are not always as visible as in other sports. Sports where records are set, such as in the Olympic Games. Training teams is difficult and the physical condition is better. Players must be able to adapt to the new requirements, this is the most important thing. Today's rhythm in the game is incomparable to what football was before.

Who do you think is the best player of the history of football?(Oleg Kovalsky)

In every generation there's a great player, you cannot choose only one. When I played, my idol was Pele, it is not up for discussion. Before him it was Di Stefano, then Beckenbauer and Cruyff appeared. If we analyze all the major tournaments, it's possible to draw certain conclusions. For example, at the 1958 World Cup it was a very technical football, where the Brazilians stood out. Then the hero was Pele. In 1962 football became more physical, the World Cup became hard, with a lot of injuries. Czechoslovakia then finished second. At then at each successive championship something stood out and took a step forward in terms of football development. Same thing with the players. The European Championship in France, maybe not immediately, but also had an impact on the development of the game and players. Now there are new strong teams that make the best teams and players raise their game. There are new stars that still contribute to football.

You know a lot of languages. What was the most difficult to learn? (Alexander Dubinin)

The most complicated language is the one that you do not want to study.

Mr Lucescu, what kind of cuisine you prefer?(Oleg Glazkov)

Mediterranean. Italian, Spanish, Greek and some Turkish cuisine.

Do you remember your playing career? (Vova Fedotov)

I try not to remember it. Of course, it remains in my memory, but it is better not to think much about it. I just live in the present and in the future.

How do you like St. Petersburg? Where have you been, where do you want to visit? (Stas Rozenbaum)

At the weekend after the game against CSKA Moscow, I just went to Peterhof. This is an amazing place, but for two hours I had to stand in line to get into the palace. It was a hot day, in the crowd, there was a lot of people, with children and many elderly. You may want to review some of the visiting rules to make it more comfortable at such a popular tourist destination. Anyway, I saw what I wanted, it was my first visit to Peterhof. I haven't been anywhere else yet, I haven't had enough time to explore the city in detail. I know the history of St. Petersburg, so I'm sure to visit the many attractions, but a bit later.

Tell me about your family. Are you alone in St. Petersburg? What about your children and grandchildren? (Peter Kunshin)

In St. Petersburg I'm here with my wife. My son, he's a football coach, currently working at the Greek team, Xanthi, the side from where Yuri Lodygin joined Zenit from. My granddaughter has just graduated from university in England and my grandson in Holland. Soon they will come to St. Petersburg to get acquainted with the city.
