Biography

Alexander Medvedev was born on 14th August 1955 in Sakhalin in Russia’s Far East. He graduated from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology with a degree in automation and control systems, and is also a candidate of economic sciences. Since 2002 he has been on the board of Gazprom and from 2005 to 2019, he served as deputy chairman of Gazprom. From 2002 to 2014 he also held the position of general director of Gazprom Export. In 2006 he became chairman of the board of directors of SKA Ice Hockey Club in St. Petersburg and remained as chairman until 2011, when he switched to being deputy chairman of SKA. From 2008 to 2014 he was chairman of the board of the KHL, the Continental Hockey League. In 2016 he rejoined the club’s board of directors. Since 2015 he became the general director of the St. Petersburg Open Tennis Tournament and in 2016 he also took control of the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy tennis tournament. In February 2019 Alexander was appointed as General Director, (later the position changed to Chairman of the Management Committee) of Zenit Football Club. Under his leadership the club have won five league titles in a row, including the league and cup double in 2019/20 and a record eight Russian Super Cups in 2023.
