The Atletico Paranaense graduate made his debut in 2013 and played 134 matches and scored 19 goals for his home town club. In 2011, he won the South America U17 championships with Brazil

He joined Zenit in December 2016 and spent the 2017/18 season on loan at Saint-Etienne in France.

Hernani has played 37 matches for Zenit, scoring once and making two assists.
