Sergei Semak "We are in with a chance and we are battling"

The Zenit manager on the home win over Benfica.
We're delighted with the win and we deserved it today. We played well and created chances. A little bit towards the end we lost our concentration. Overall it was a good and fiery game and a well-deserved win. We created good chances and won deservedly.

What about Smolnikov? Why did you decide to sub him for Osorio?

Benfica were coming back into the game, they had two strikers who can be dangerous in the air and they were starting to play it out wide for crosses. So I wanted a player who is good in the air on the pitch. We're not sure about Smolnikov and he'll be looked at tomorrow and I hope it's nothing serious, it is with his rib, which I hope is not broken.

Was Benfica's lineup a surprise for you, with the inclusion of Jardel, who has only played one match?

We assumed they would play like that and we hoped Benfica would play a traditional 4-4-2, but they dropped one striker and strengthened the middle of the pitch. We expected them to be like Lyon, having one player who plays well up front. But we knew what was possible. Yes Jardel hasn't played much and his appearance was not expected after looking at their recent matches. It's up to the Benfica manager to decide who is better for them in a particular match.

After the group draw, you said it's an even group and every team has a chance. Now Zenit are top and things are looking positive, how do you rate your chances of getting into the next round now?

Absolutely nothing has changed. We are in with a chance and we are battling. The next few matches will show us how even the group really is. We've just seen Lyon win away so we can see there are no easy matches and never will be in this group. Today it went well for us, but next time it can go well for someone else. The team in the next stage will be the one who scores the most points.

How is Dzyuba? He was down on the ground for a long time and looked to be injured.

I hope he's fine, he has some bruising on his hip and I hope it's nothing serious. When your hip gets hit hard, it can be very unpleasant. I hope this is not too serious and he will be able to take part in the next match.

Zenit and Benfica have a good past record of matches with each other and transfer deals. Have you looked at any of their players?

The players that we like are very expensive and unfortunately for us, will be difficult to sign. There are a lot of quality players in their side.
