St. Petersburg historians have created a website dedicate to the football played during WWII
The blokada-futbol.ru site was launched on 31 May, the anniversary of the first game to take place during the Seige of Leningrad.
During this time of immense suffering that included military bombardments, air raids, starvation and an acute shortage of medicines, life went on in Leningrad and so did football, with scores of games taking place and hundreds of people involved.
An amazing group of local historians and football fanatics including Yuri Lukosyak, Alexei Dunaevsky, Sergei Rumyantsev, Nikolai Moskovtsev Alla Sherementyev have brought together hundreds of documents, photographs and exhibits to tell the story of how football survived during these dark times.
