Yuri Zhirkov made his international debut in February 2005 in a friendly against Italy and with Russia he was part of the sides who made it to the semi-finals of Euro 2008 and the quarterfinals of the 2018 World Cup.

Yuri Zhirkov is the sixth player in the history of Russian football to win 100 caps. the others include Sergey Ignashevich (127), Viktor Onopko (113), Oleg Blokhin (112), Igor Akinfeev (111) and Vasily Berezutsky (101).
