Mikhail Kerzhakov: "Playing for my hometown club is a real privilege"

Congratulations on the new contract, how are you feeling?

Thank you! I feel very positive and playing for my hometown club is a real privilege.

How have you spent your summer so far?

I’ve been with my family and we went to Cyprus. We were there for two weeks and I went in the sea with my child. We had a great time and he really enjoyed it, especially at the end of the trip. I really liked it and it’s great that we were able to go. At first we’d booked to go to Turkey, but that was cancelled so we changed things.

We also went to visit my grandmother in near Tver, that’s where our son was baptized, in an old church. My brother was there too. We came back to St. Petersburg yesterday and I’ve tried to stay fit. Maria Burova gave me a training programme to do as I’m not that young now and I need to maintain my fitness. I’ve been very busy during our time off.

Have you recovered from the injury you picked up in March?

No, I'm fine. I’m in good shape.

Have you spoken to your teammate Andrey Mostovoy, who has had to withdraw from the Russian squad due to a positive COVID-19 test and will miss Euro 2020?

I only heard the news about ten minutes ago and it is very sad for him, especially as it’s happened at the very last minute and he’ll miss the Euros. This is the situation we live in now and no one is immune from it. I’m sure this will not be his last major tournament.
