A tough March

The majority of Zenit players who have been loaned to other teams are currently playing in European leagues. But their play in March left a lot to be desired.

To begin with, the French side Monaco, featuring Zenit player Sebastian Puygrenier, continues to suffer at the bottom of the French league table. The famous club, which has made the Champions League final in the fast, is going through dark times. Monaco has picked up only 29 points in 28 matches this year. In the last March matchday the Monaco side was beaten at home by modest Nancy 1:0. Puygrenier didn`t do anything special in 3 matches in March, besides picking up two yellow cards. The only credit you can give to Puygrenier is that his team allowed only one goal in three matches. Maybe that`s not such a bad result.

Cesena, featuring Zenit halfback Alessandro Rosina, finally managed to climb out of the relegation zone thanks to four excellent matches in a row without a loss. The Italian side managed by Massimo Ficcadenti managed to get a tie with Juventus, and beat Sampdoria on the road. That said, Cesena achieved these results for the most without Rosina. Alessandro came on as a sub in both matches, playing 18 and 17 minutes, respectively, coming on as a substitute at the end of the match. In the last March match, against Lazio, Rosina didn`t play at all because of a thigh muscle injury. Rosina is hoping to return to action in the beginning of April.

Zenit`s third foreign player in a European league – Michael Lumb – has just started match play for Alborg, since the Danish league just resumed play in March. The Danish defender, who was loaned by Zenit to Aalborg, has played in all three of his team`s matches from start do end, and has been reliable at the back, while also making forays into the attack, according to the club`s fans. Aalborg`s play in the Danish League was quite successful in March: one win on the road, a tie, and a loss at home to the league leaders Copenhagen. But March didn`t resolve Aalborg`s problems, as the team with 20 points is still in 12th, last place in the Danish League.

The English Premier League side Blackpool, featuring Zenit player Sergey Kornilenko, also continues to be in danger, being just one line above the relegation zone. And March was not a successful month for them. Blackpool picked up just one point from two matches. This point came from a 2:2 tie in Blackburn. The team couldn`t stand up to Chelsea at home, losing 1:3. That said, Kornilenko didn`t play in either of these two matches. Furthermore, Kornilenko wasn`t even named among the players for the match in Blackburn.

Finally, two young Zenit players on loan to Tom – Maxim Kannunikov and Evgeny Starikov – appeared in both of Tom`s matches to start the Russian Premier League season. But so far Tom`s matches haven`t brought any pleasure to the team`s supporters, with two losses and not a single goal scored.
