Ahead of tomorrow's 79th Victory Day anniversary, the club honoured the fallen in St. Petersburg.

The club honours the memory of the victims of the Great Patriotic War at the Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery

Club captains Alexander Erokhin and Douglas Santos led the procession and the first team was joined by Zenit coaches, Zenit Women, Zenit-2, Zenit U21s and players from the Gazprom Academy, as well as club staff.

Sergei Semak stated: “This day is of course, a celebration, but also a time for sorrow. We are in a place where many, many people are buried. Soldiers and civilians who died during the Siege of Leningrad and the Great Patriotic War. It is very important that everyone, the residents of our city, know the history of our country and our city.

The players laid flowers at the Motherland monument and paid their respects to the memory of the fallen with a minute of silence. 

The Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery in St. Petersburg is one of the largest cemeteries in the country and was the burial site for the civilian victims of the Leningrad Blockade, as well the soldiers fighting on the Leningrad Front. Approximately 420,000 residents of the city, who died from starvation, disease, cold and the actions of the invaders, as well as 70,000 defenders of Leningrad are buried in the 186 mass graves and 6,000 individual military graves in the cemetery.
