Zenit fans abroad: Joni from Tampere, Finland

Our Zenit fan abroad today is Joni Riihikoski from just over the border in Finland. A convert from ice-hockey, Joni says come and say hi if you see him in the Petrovsky.

Tell us a little about yourself, what do you do? What are you hobbies?

I am from Finland. I have two dogs and a wife. I drive a bus for a living and my hobbies are cross-country skiing in winter and cycling in summer and of course following Zenit!

How did you first get interested in Zenit?

It was autumn 2008, when Zenit played in the UEFA Cup final and won it against Glasgow Rangers. Back then I wasn't actively following football, only ice hockey. But that match got me started again and so I started following Zenit, Finland is close to St.Petersburg so I go and see home matches and follow the club as much as possible.

What’s the first match you remember watching?

As I said it was the 2008 UEFA Cup (nowadays called the UEFA Europa League) final.
The game played in Manchester and I remember there were lots of Rangers fans. My first game live, hmmmm I'm not sure!

Who’s your all-time favourite Zenit player? Who do you like in the current squad and why?

I follow and like more defenders, I have to think about it as it's a hard choice. Yes I will say Anyukov is my all-time favourite. He is reliable and loyal. He also played in that first match I saw in 2008. Nowadays I also really like Smolnikov and his playing style.

What are you hoping for us next season?

My main hope is the players are healthy with no injuries. After this I'm excited about the new playing style Lucescu is training the team to play, the pre-season games against Sporting Lisbon and Monaco were good indicators of what's to come!

Which areas of the squad would you like to see Zenit strengthen in? Who realistically should we be looking at signing?

Hulk has left, but I think we have a balanced team even without him, In the future, I hope Zenit can find some new and young Russian great players, I'm very pleased about Robert Mak's signing, he played quite well at the European Championships for the Slovakian team and I think we got him for a great price!

You live in Tampere, Finland. How would you describe this city for your fellow fans? What’s the local football like?

Tampere is the third biggest city in Finland with about 230,000 people. It's located on the south/west of Finland, between two lakes.Best football team in Tampere is called FC Ilves, they play in Finland's top league (Veikkausliiga). The home stadium has 5000 seats.

If Zenit fans plan to visit your part of the world what place is a must-see and what food should they try?

Finland is a small country to the west of Russia. We have about 5.5 million people.
It is said that Finland is the country of a thousand lakes. Special things in Finland are Finnish saunas, the midnight sun and the aurora borealis. Northern Finland is great, the mountains in Lapland, the wild nature and in winter it can be cold, as much as -40C.

Do you know any other Zenit fans where you live or are you the only one?

Here in Finland ice hockey is more popular than football and my friends do not follow football at all. But I know one Zenit fan, he lives in East-Finland.

What are your thoughts of Euro 2016? Who impressed you? Who disappointed?

Russia is my favourite and their game was not very successful. I am disappointed in Belgium too, such an expensive team and their tournament came to an end so early. I think Icelandic surprised everyone!

Do you have a message for the manager, The team and all the Zenit fans out there?

I hope the team gets a nice start of the league and I hope to come and watch some Zenit games this year in St. Petersburg. If you see me then come talk to me, though I do not speak English (or Russian) very well but I will understand somehow :-)
