Alexander graduated from the Samara school of football and joined Zenit in 2005. During his time in St. Petersburg, Alexander has played 371 for Zenit and scored 12 goals, as well as making 26 assists. He won the league four times and the Cup twice and was part of the UEFA cup winning team of 2008.
