Igor Smolnikov: "The appointment of Semak is great news!"

The Zenit fullback spoke to the media about Zenit's new boss and the upcoming World Cup.
How did the Zenit players react to Semak's appointment?

I think this is great news for all of us and I want to congratulate Sergey personally. God grant us all as many victories as possible.

On Friday, Russia suddenly closed the training session to the press. What happened?  What did Cherchesov do with you?

First we had a small discussion and then some productive training. But since it was closed, I will not talk about it in detail.

What was the discussion about? Did Cherchesov blame you players for playing poorly against Austria? Or take the blame on himself?

I don't think is was necessary to blame anyone personally. We were are guilty. In more detail we spoke about the match and discussed theory. We pointed out all the errors and shortcomings.

What mistakes and shortcomings dis you see? The defeat was painful to watch.

Listen ... Somethings did not work out, but the most important thing is to draw the right conclusions and play a completely different game against Turkey. After all, that will be the last rehearsal before the World Cup.

The Russian team seemed quite chaotic against Austria.

I would not say that there was chaos. Just somethings did not work. That's all. We'll look at it some more tonight.

Do you feel the team have the potential for serious growth during the next two weeks?

I still think that we have very good talented young players. Everything will be seen at the World Cup. One match with Austria was poor.

How can you please the fans?

Many thanks to them for their support. I want to ask them to continue to support us. And we will try our part and do everything we possibly can.

Do you already feel that the World Cup is very close?

We have been training in Austria and every day we feel stronger and stronger and we will especially after the game with Turkey. In the meantime, we are thinking directly about that, our emotions must be turned off.
