Christian started his career at Emelek in Guayaquil. In 2007, he came to Russia and joined Rubin Kazan, becoming the first Ecuadorian in the Russian Premier Liga. He won the league title twice while in Kazan.
From 2012 to 2014, he played for Dynamo Moscow and in January 2015, he moved to the Greek side PAOK, but six months later returned to Russia with Rostov and finished runners-up in that season's title race,
On 4 June 2017, he joined the blue-white-sky blues and has played 17 times for Zenit, scoring one goal and making five assists.
