Oleg Shatov was born on 29 July 1990 in Nizhny Tagil and began his career playing five-a-side football. In 2007 he was signed by Ural and played more than 100 matches for the Ekaterinburg club and was voted as their player of the year in 2010. In 2012 he moved to Anzhi and was part of their side that finished third in the RPL.

In 2013 he joined Zenit and whilst in St. Petersburg played 202 matches, scored 31 goals and made 44 assists. He won the league title here three times as well as the Russian Cup twice.
