The 2-0 scoreline does little to flatter Sergei Semak's men and in truth, the scoreline may have been much greater. Sardar Azmoun seemed to have opened the scoring on 8 minutes when he tucked in a Slava Karavaev cross from just a couple of yards out after great work from Dejan Lovren on the right to create the chance. However 34-year-old referee Pavel Shadykhanov decided to consult VAR and then ruled out the goal for a foul by Lovren in the build-up, the decision seemed more than harsh and the Moscow native even booked the Croatian for the foul. Azmoun also seemed to have earned a certain penalty when he was pulled back in the box on 20 minutes, but again the decision didn't go Zenit's way.

The first half continued in much the same vain with the home side dominating and other than a few half-chances falling Mirzov's way, it was all Zenit. Slava Karavaev was the man to break the deadlock on the stroke of halftime. The rightback, found the ball at his feet in the middle of a goalmouth scramble and made no mistake, the goal coming after Douglas Santos' original strike had rattled the underside of the bar following a corner. The blue-white-sky blues went into the break a deserved goal up.

The second half was all Zenit and further golden chances fell to Azmoun, Dzyuba and Douglas Santos, who'd pushed forward all game. It took until two minutes into added time for Wendel to break forward and find substitute Andrey Mostovoy in space, giving the young Russian a perfect ball for him to finish and make the score beyond doubt.

Sergei Semak's side remain in first place in the Russian Premier Liga, four points clear at the top with six games to play. Zenit's next match is the away trip to Sochi on Sunday 11 April.
