We spoke to the Zenit midfielder at the start of the second Gazprom Training Camp in Qatar.
Alexander Kovalenko: "Coutinho is a world-class player, and it’s interesting to see what you can do against a player like him"

What did you do in training today?

We played a match and had a small tournament with three teams of eight players. Then we had a big debate if the goal was offside or not, if it was, then the other side would have won, but it wasn’t, so we won!

Did you need a video review?

Yes, VAR is on!

What about the penalty shootout?

We did the shootout as we hadn’t done done the VAR review then.

So you won?

Of course we won!

How do you feel physically at the moment?

My legs are a little tired, they feel a bit heavy. I think this training will get us all in shape. We recently had a three-day weekend to have a rest, and now we’re back to work.

How did you relax over the weekend?

I went to the beach and sunbathed.

Is it harder to get back into training after the weekend?

It is more difficult, you’ve completely relaxed and done nothing, and then it’s back to hard work.

Are you excited for the upcoming matches?

Certainly, I’m excited.

What do you think of the teams you’re playing?

They’re very interesting, especially Santos. I really want to see how I play against them.

The first match is against Al-Duhail. What do you know about them?

I just know Coutinho plays for them.

Are you looking forward to playing against him?

Certainly, he’s a world-class player, and it’s interesting to see what you can do against a player like him.

Are you ready to play a full 90 minutes?

Yes. I think it will be a little difficult, but I can handle it.
