Sergei Semak: "We earned a very difficult win today"

The Zenit boss spoke to the press after the 2-0 win in Moscow over CSKA.
Sergei Semak: "We earned a very difficult win today"

Today was a tough match and we didn't have many chances. But we were able to take the chances we did have and the opposition didn’t. We earned a very difficult win today, in what wasn’t the highest quality game. We were lethargic and didn’t have the movement or ball control we wanted. The lads gave their all today and worked hard without the ball. The most important thing is that we got the win and now go on to the next match.

Before your first goal, CSKA were in control, did you deliberately give them the ball and the initiative?

We didn’t start well and didn’t have enough movement or control of the ball. They looked fresher and moved better, so had advantage in controlling the ball in the first minutes. We were able to level the game and then score. We had quite a few opportunities in the second half as we used the empty space behind the CSKA defence well, however we only took advantage of this right at the end.

In the second half, Zenit spent a lot of time on the back foot. Are you happy with your team's defensive performance?

There were some chances at our goal and that means somewhere things were not right. We did have some questionable situations and there are always issues. I am not happy with the quality of the game, but I am happy with the result. There are were some rough edges and there are things for us to work on. We’ll analyze the situation and work more.
