Sergei Semak: "It’s a great tournament with testing matches"

We spoke to the Zenit manager after the 2-0 win over Al-Duhail in the Equality Cup.
Sergei Semak: "It’s a great tournament with testing matches"

It was a good game and was quite intense. The first half was quite tough, in the second we had more chances. It’s a great tournament with testing matches. We will now start to prepare for the next one.

You’ve experimented with two and three central defenders this season, but does the arrival of Artur and Pedro in attack mean four-at-the-back will be the default one?

I think that we must be flexible with our tactics and see how our players perform in our strongest team. Today we mainly used 4-3-3 to fit with the players we selected. We have enough good quality defenders, but most importantly we have good competition in the middle, we may use three defenders.

Which players impressed you today?

It’s difficult to single out anyone in particular. I think that a number of players had a good match, including our central defenders Erakovic and Nino looked very convincing. In attack, Mateo Cassierra played well as did Claudinho, who had a very good match. Pedro and Artur are still getting used to things here, but their qualities are clear to see, but they probably still lack match fitness.

What is your main goal here, winning the tournament or dealing with training problems?

Our main priority is getting ready for the restart of the season. We aren’t specifically preparing for these games, these are just part of our season preparations. We always want to win of course, but the most important thing for us is that everyone stays fit and gradually gets into their best condition.

You had a number of players watching from the stands today, why was that?

It’s important, we are a team and we play and support each other. Today those who didn’t play came to support the team, and it will be the same at the match tomorrow. It’s the right thing.
