Mateo Cassierra: "The main thing is that we win the Cup!"

Congratulations on winning the RPL golden boot! You had a long streak without scoring, can you explain that poor run?

This is football and it happens. Before the dry streak I had a fairly good run of scoring goals, before I hit that bad run, and during it I continued to train hard and give it my best, and everything depended on me. Sometimes the ball hits the back of the net, and at other times it doesn’t. The most important thing is that  I scored a lot of goals against Akhmat and that helped me go into the match against Rostov really motivated and focused. I may not have scored, we won and took the title. I think at the end of the day, the team’s success is the most important thing.

You’re the league’s top scorer, but to be the top scorer in the Cup you need to score three goals in the final, and Ivan Sergeev is the Cup’s top scorer with five goals. Is that your aim?

No. You know, the most important thing for me is that the team wins and we win the Cup. This is much more important and will always be more important to me than individual awards. Winning the golden boot is already in the past and now we have to focus is on the game against Baltika. I will try to help the team and it doesn’t matter who scores. The main thing is that we win the Cup.

Can you tell us about your earrings? Can you play a match in them or is are they just for training?

I like to wear them during training, and no, they are not allowed in official matches. But I always wear them during training, I like them.

Who is your favourite Colombian player? Is it Carlos Valderrama, James Rodriguez...

Colombia has a lot of excellent attacking players, recently the top players have been James Rodriguez or Luis Diaz. But I will say Falcao, who had a great career, especially in European football. I was lucky to meet him personally and he’s always been a role model for me, so I’ll say Falcao.
