The Zenit manager spoke to us as the team returned to training.
Sergei Semak: "We can't play any friendly games yet, as we don’t have enough players"

It’s not been long between the end of last season and the beginning of this. Are you rested and ready for the new season?

I think the break has been good, although unfortunately, not for everyone. This has been our main problem when getting ready. We’ve had no idea who’ll be ready to train and get the players together. This has affected our preparation and we wanted to draft players in from Zenit-2, but they have a game today. At the moment we only have eight outfield players here. Once Zenit-2 finish, we will call in some of their players to train with us. We’ll see who’ll be able to join us for our training camp.

How does having such a limited number of players affect training? Have you changed the way you train?

Yes they’re different, it’s difficult to organise and train in such small groups. Some of the usual things we do, we can’t because we don’t have enough players.

Your training in St. Petersburg, not abroad, for the first time in many summers. Is this due to the limited number of players?

There was no point in training abroad as we can't play any friendly games yet, as we don’t have enough players. I don’t see much of a difference in training here or abroad at the moment. We will have one foreign training camp, when our first team players, Zenit-2 and youth players will be available to us.

How is Andrey Mostovoy? When will we see him back in training?

He feels fine. As soon as he has a negative COVID-19 test, he’ll be back with the team.
